What has Kupenda initiated so far?

Installed water reticulation system

In September 2008 the boy’s home was re plumbed by Kupenda Projects. The house previously had no running water. The water was purchased weekly delivered by water tanker and carried by buckets to the house to be used at shower time so the boys could wash. There was also no running water for use in the kitchen facility either.

Kupenda projects re plumbed the entire house and installed an electric pressure pump to ensure that water could be utilised from the main well on the property. The well was tapped into a main local bore water system to allow for constant water supply. The boys aged between 4 and 18 now have access to running water inside the house and now enjoy their showering and cooking experience.

Under the guidance of Clem Davies (named ‘The General’ by the boys) a number of the boys were given the opportunity to be involved in the plumbing of the house and learnt new vocational skills on the job.

Upgrade cooking equipment

The house mamas, women who look after the boys, cater for the 35 live in boys as well as up to 150 who come for a feeding and care program each week are also now able to cook with running water!

Although jeekos (charcoal burners) are a very widely used cooking method in Kenya they can be of major health hazard when used inside and as frequently as required. Kupenda projects purchased and installed cooking equipment based on gas for use within the kitchen. This provides a healthy and more efficient working environment for everyone involved.
